MY BACKYARD TOUR

 A few NYC MOMENTS.... 

I realize I haven't done a tour around NYC lately...  

Well, it's been so darn cold who can blame me?

Today High 50's (woohoo!)

and lovely.. so after I finished Boo's Pillow...(I think she liked it),

We went for a walk in our back yard.....

Playtime

A bit of play today! Finally a day to play with some fabrics... 

I'm not totally organized, but I HAD to sew,

you know how it goes!

I have had an urge to play with sugar skulls...  And anything day of the dead...

I know, I don't use novelty prints... but her! we all gotta break out of the box sometimes!

I have no project in mind for them, I made probably 4 different blocks, and perhaps they will all fall into one odd quilt... why not...

I happily dove into my small scraps bin, and played for my 15 minutes.

and then I went to work on some a strip for our NYC metro MOD guild group quilt...

The next meeting is October 2nd,at my place,  if any of you are in NYC! 

This play lead me to another project, (of course) that's the beauty of 15 minutes...

MOMA-

We ran up to the Museum of Modern Art today to see the Matisse show...

Glorious Show!  great time period of his work.

We also walked through the Modern galleries, 

and saw this QUILT by a German artist, 

Kai Althoff, Regulatory Reestablishment, 2000

Felt, Wool, Quilt and Wool...

Of course I had to it to check it out...

MAKE-

All three of us went to MAKE ... (pottery painting)

it's something my hubby did way back when we first started dating, 

and B and I have gone for years to make little treasures...

We were very serious about our little creations...

We get them back in 4 days.... Can't wait!

Isn't it so fun to MAKE Stuff?

I'm so happy I can make it through my studio to get to my machine and sew!

I've thought about all the projects I have to get finished, and it gets a little overwhelming...

Gotta make a few lists, and persevere!  Ideas are churning....

I love NY

Today was spent walking around my favorite city in the world. 

My home. 

NYC.

My day started out with Jackie, from Canton Village Quiltworks, 

and Karen Griska, of Selvage blog,

coming over for lunch. 

 

They spoiled me with cupcakes... yum!

We walked down to the Empire Quilt guild meeting at F.I.T. 

and listened to Terry White talk about Machine beading and thread painting...

then sat back and watched the Show and Tell. (they will up date some time soon) 

Always a lot of fun.

Afterward, we took a stroll to City Quilter, and of course picked up a few goodies...

(I see a sugar skull project in my future...)

and a to a few of the fabric shops in my garment center hood... Need silks? 

My hood is a good place to find some cheap...

We said our goodbyes, and I meandered home, 

only to be met with my hubby and daughter and two dogs, wanting to walk 

to the piers on the Hudson river, not far from our loft.

By the time we left, the sun had set... 

And we took our moments of silence for the Twin Towers tribute in lights shining from ground zero.

I love my NEW YORK.

Remember

Remembering 9.11

Have you seen any of the memorial quilts for 9.11?

I've had several emails lately asking what it was like to live in NYC when it happened...

I have very strong visual & sound memories from that day, I'll never forget...

That day I was out with my daughter in her stroller...

I had my video camera with me, and all I can really tell you,

Standing in the middle of 6th ave and 23rd St. ,

All traffic had stopped and people got out of their cars

and stood staring at the WTC. 

(rather like in the movies)

Smoke, clouds, and then just like that,

 a cloud drifted away, and the first tower completely disappeared before our eyes...

Not a sound. 

I ran quickly home with B, through the crowds of people, 

Sirens blasting were the only thing you heard...

and turned on my television as the second tower came down.

Ash covered the air, the smell ran all over the city,

And all was silent.

Little did we know that

my Stepson's godmother, Berry Berenson, was on flight 11

that crashed into the towers.

It was very hard to live here after that... 

New York changed. We all changed.

Please take a moment to think about every one's loved ones lost that day.

A NY minute

I had high hopes of getting loads done today, sewing. BUT, I sat at my computer ALL DAY, and I still am, merging computers, files images, music, etc etc etc blah blah blah...
SO for today you get some New york moments...

Yesterday we had some errands to do, so we went to a place called Chelsea Market about 20 blocks away from me.. It has many great bakeries, food places, meat locker, fish market, flowers books store, etc... Fun place to go when it's COLD out side...
They had the entire place decorated with recycled plastic...by

environmental artist Tom Deininger and Creative Voltage of Los Angeles

The Christmas tree was made from CD's & Dvd's and at the base of the tree was VCR TAPE, the wreath was also a mixture of the two...

And the light globe fixtures were made from red green and clear plastic cups and bottles... And they all looked AMAZING! the best use of plastic I've seen!

We then walked home, and decided we wanted to see the Highline now that the season has changed...
The highline was a railroad track above ground that ran down the west side of Manhattan for shipping... then deserted, it sat for years unattended.. No wit's been made into a above ground park... Brilliant use of dead NYC space...
