Collaborations

A year ago, my Pal Janet and I started a Round robin Project together. (old post here) It started with two Squares with a red cross inside.  Our goal was to make TWO improvisational INTUITION quilts, nearly the same, but not perfectly, of course. Adding from  scraps, this way and that way.... here and there, and handing it back and forth until we both felt it was complete... Letting it grow organically, and in a very free form way.

We've decided we reached the COMPLETE stage...   I restrained myself form making it into a king size quilt, and got Janet to let me make it a bit bigger than small wall hanging!  Success!  Two quilts!

For me, it became about the fabrics. Focusing on patterns that worked well together, and balancing the color. Janet has some great fabrics in her collection that were quite different from mine, so I had to look closely to see what commercial fabrics I had that would work well with her "worldly" style fabrics... Ikats , wax prints, Indigos and shirtings, make up this joint effort. It's a beautiful collection of Fabrics!

I do have a large amount of African prints, so, I selected this green and orange/blue print for the backings...

It's  a delicious gift!  I look forward to quilting it, although It may take me awhile... I feel like it needs to be hand quilted with big perle cotton stitches... In that case it will join a long list of started hand quilting projects. Perhaps I will quilt half of it on the machine, and then hand quilt... Just to get it done in my life time. LOL!

Have you done any collaborative work with another quilter?  There's a lot to learn about each other this way.  You really get to look and see how another person works. I treasure the time that wen into this project.  I admire Janet's work, and her EYE for quilting.  Thanks Janet, for playing along with me!

  2. Wonderful quilts. I have wanted to do some collaborative work for a long time. I just haven't figured out how to get it started. I really like the intuitive round robin idea. In addition to the round robin quilt, I would also like to do a quilt where a few people work from a piece of a photograph that is eventually joined into one piece. I have a friend who is involved in a group of six who take turns selecting the photograph so eventually each one will get a finished piece. They have created some beautiful pieces.

  4. I have done a little with my friend Debby Brown, but now she travels all over teaching so we don't get much quilting time together.

Love stopping by to see all the quilting fun you are having.

    Happy Sewing

  6. I've done swaps and round robins but no collaborative projects. Very unique quilts and I love the African fabric for the back. One day I just might "let a quilt grow".

  7. I've collaborated on group quilts, and made a few with one or two other quiltmakers, as well as making half a dozen with elementary school kids. Not quite what you're talking about, but it's something. Your pair of quilts look great. What's the story with the new Bernina? and the Sweet Sixteen? no more Jukis?

  8. These two quilts are wonderful!!! And I love the fabric you chose for the back . . .

I've not done collaborations like the one shown here, but have taken projects others have started and then finished them. Currently I'm playing with fabrics left from one of Chris's quilts and making my own quilt with her fabrics (our taste is comfortably close).

Happy holidays to you and yours!! Keep the colors coming . . .

  9. Fabulous and fun idea! My sister and I talked about doing something like that awhile back, but never did. I think it would be great fun to do with a group of 4-6 people.
