A year ago, my Pal Janet and I started a Round robin Project together. (old post here) It started with two Squares with a red cross inside. Our goal was to make TWO improvisational INTUITION quilts, nearly the same, but not perfectly, of course. Adding from scraps, this way and that way.... here and there, and handing it back and forth until we both felt it was complete... Letting it grow organically, and in a very free form way.
We've decided we reached the COMPLETE stage... I restrained myself form making it into a king size quilt, and got Janet to let me make it a bit bigger than small wall hanging! Success! Two quilts!
For me, it became about the fabrics. Focusing on patterns that worked well together, and balancing the color. Janet has some great fabrics in her collection that were quite different from mine, so I had to look closely to see what commercial fabrics I had that would work well with her "worldly" style fabrics... Ikats , wax prints, Indigos and shirtings, make up this joint effort. It's a beautiful collection of Fabrics!
I do have a large amount of African prints, so, I selected this green and orange/blue print for the backings...
It's a delicious gift! I look forward to quilting it, although It may take me awhile... I feel like it needs to be hand quilted with big perle cotton stitches... In that case it will join a long list of started hand quilting projects. Perhaps I will quilt half of it on the machine, and then hand quilt... Just to get it done in my life time. LOL!
Have you done any collaborative work with another quilter? There's a lot to learn about each other this way. You really get to look and see how another person works. I treasure the time that wen into this project. I admire Janet's work, and her EYE for quilting. Thanks Janet, for playing along with me!
