Welcome to the Quilt Alliance Blog hop!
I have been on the board of the Quilt Alliance since 2011! WOW! Time flies!!! Can I share a secret with you? The Quilt Alliance pulled me out of my shell...
I have always been a shy person. I loved blogging because it kept me behind a computer screen, where I didn't really have to talk to anyone face to face! I know you don't believe me, but please do.
I've come a long way.
I've come a long way.
When I first was acquainted with the Quilt Alliance, I offered up my home to host the After Dark Party of the event. They said, well, we'd like to interview you for our Quilter S.O.S. ( save our Stories) series... I said sure!
Then they said,
"And we will do it in your loft, with the 100 people in attendance!"
100 people?? Wait, What?
and I did it, I sat in front of all those people, nervous as all get out,
(the photo shows my pained expressions) and answered questions for 45 minutes.
I really thought I'd pass out and fall on the floor... I look back at it now, and think, Wow...
What did I even say!
Here's the cool thing...
You an go back and read all archived interviews at the Quilt Alliance website...
Including mine right here!! Search by interviewee, and my last name.
(I'm sure there are a lot of "ummm's" in there...)
I'm forever grateful to the Quilt Alliance for being my very first interview, I can go back now and see how much I've grown, how I'm not as shy as I was, Although I still am... PLUS, we are saving the stories of our work!
Have you ever come across an old quilt, and thought, "I wonder what the quilter was thinking when she made her choices, selected fabrics, and made this quilt?"
This is where the Quilt Alliance is so important,
It's giving us a voice to record our history of ourselves, and our quilts that will out live beyond us!
Besides Q.S.O.S. interviews, they now are doing video, short recordings, called, GO TELL IT!
Here is one of mine below, and I have others at my website, under VIDEOS.
(Yes, I have videos at my website! Did you know? Loads of good info over there...)
DOCUMENTING
PRESERVING (OUR HISTORY!)
and SHARING the stories of Quilts and Quilters....
The best thing is, YOU can do Q.S.O.S. interviews yourself! This isn't just for a select few, this is for all of us quilters... ALL OF US! You can get involved here! Find out how you can do this and be apart of preserving our quilt history.
SO! Besides that, Quilters Take Manhattan, Our YEARLY FUNDRAISING event (we are a grass roots organization after all) is here in NYC, Sept. 23-25th... The 24th is our big event at F.I.T., and we have Kaffe Fasset this year as our speaker! The even is SOLD OUT, but we still have other events during the coarse of the weekend with tickets available, including, a AFTER DARK PARTY at my home... Remember, It's a fundraising event, we can do this work without your support. Thank you!
Come on up and say hi! (keep on reading for info for giveaway below!)

I can totally relate to the whole "shy" thing. We're so glad you've come out of your shell to share all your beautiful work with the world! Would love to get to NYC one day for this, but not this year....
ReplyDeleteI have always wanted to attend this event. I am only a train ride away but the cost to do so is a factor and I'd rather not travel down alone. It is an awesome organization doing great things to record the history of quilting and promoting the art of quilting. One day I will make it down.
ReplyDeleteI have been to NYC about 40 years ago. Loved Broadway and shopping. Hope to return after I retire.Darlene dhoctor@sbcglobal.net
ReplyDeleteI've been to nyc several times, always fun.
ReplyDeletelaura333369 at gmail dot com
I have been to NYC twice. Once just to JFK, then to Long Island, and flew back out of Laguarida, and the second time was to a wedding reception in Midtown. pattynubs at gmail dot com
ReplyDeleteHave never been to NYC. Actually never had the desire as it seems to be a sea of people, buildings and traffic....and noise! Maybe one day some event will be the right reason to go. grannaishere at Verizon dot net
ReplyDeleteThe only time I was ever in NYC was when I was 4 years old. I still have an uncle and aunt there, but, I usually see them in Texas.
ReplyDeleteWe moved to Connecticut when I was very little. We went to NYC many times..........but that was all over 50 years ago. I am gonna bet it is very different now. Me I am a country girl thru and thru. I can visit the city but my heart is out in the woods hiking.
ReplyDeleteI visited NYC two years ago and love, love, loved it!! Everything about it was fascinating to me, especially the people. I don't know when, but this country girl will be visiting again!
ReplyDeleteI have been to New York just once - it was July of 2002. Enjoyed the experience very much. There was a spectacular fireworks display that year.
ReplyDeleteI've been to NYC once and absolutely loved it. So much to see. I could have stayed a year--and we decided that some day, if circumstanced allow it, we'll do just that. Rent an apartment for a year and come stay, making sure we see everything we can, filling every day with something wonderful. In New York, that can happen.
ReplyDeletewordygirl at earthlink dot net
I'm shy too but I started my local MQG and have to run a meeting every month. It's been three and a half years and guess what? I'm not shy anymore!
ReplyDeleteThe only time I've been to NYC is when I was bussing from university in Toronto to surprise some friends from BC who were performing at the Philadelphia Fringe. I changed buses in NYC and stepped out to get some Ben and Jerry's (not available in Canada at the time). The street was a madhouse with cops EVERYWHERE. I asked what was going on and was told President Clinton was coming by in about 20 minutes. And that is the story of my one and only (but not last!) trip to NYC.
Good luck with the events!
Haven't been to NYC for several years...keep meaning to remedy that! Glad you have come out of your shell...don't think I ever thought of you as shy though...maybe it is because you don't make shy quilts?!
ReplyDeleteYes, I've been to NYC a few times but not anytime in the recent past. I'd love to visit again as there's so much energy there and such an opportunity to people watch. Thanks for sharing your quilts with us. Howland quilt at g mail dot com is my address.
ReplyDeleteI never would have guessed that you're shy (like me). That's so cool, and I've been to NYC, QTM, and even your loft! It's been fun and I hope I can come this year, too. Thanks.
ReplyDeleteI was at the 2012 QTM, and would love to return one year. I'm a Quilt Alliance member.
ReplyDeleteI've only been to NYC twice but never really go to visit many attractions. Would love to return and get a chance to really travel around the city. Thanks for the giveaway. grinnie1961 at gmail dot com
ReplyDeleteI visited NYC as a teenager.....I took the train from my hometown, Latrobe, PA, with friends and we went to the World's Fair...I think it was 1965...so long ago and I've never been back!!!!!
ReplyDeleteI've not yet visited NYC but would like to someday. Thanks for the opportunity! deb.rick at live dot com
ReplyDeleteI have never been to New York, would have loved to when younger, but am disabled now. So, I have reading blogs and doing blog hop stuff, makes me feel connected to quilt community. I do belong to a guild, but only make it 1-3 times a year lately. Enough! Have fun and thanks for the giveaway!

Thanks for explaining the function of quilt alliance, all about their links and how this group has impacted you personally. Very interesting.
ReplyDeleteThanks for the chance! I've been to NYC many times and I love it. I'm hoping that since my last kid just graduated from college that I can come out and visit during one of these events! Best of luck with the fundraiser!
ReplyDeleteI have not been there, maybe someday.
ReplyDeleteI am shy as well, but have come out of my 'shell' a little bit over the years. I have been to each of the QTM's since 2010. I do get to visit NYC often, just not often enough. I will be at QTM once again, volunteering. Totally looking forward to being there! jmnecheles at gmail dot com
ReplyDeleteI have never been to NYC but if I went the perfect time would be during Quilters Take Manhattan! Maybe one day.
ReplyDeleteHI,have been near by to Atlantic City, but not to NYC.Enjoy the Quilters Take Manhattan! Thank You for sharing! msstitcher1214@gmail.com
ReplyDeleteHaven't been in NYC since the mid 70's when still in high school. OMG how long ago! QTM would be the perfect reason to return.
ReplyDeleteI actually went to NYC on my honeymoon many years ago, but I have been back several times over the years. There is no other city like it! Have a wonderful time at Quilters Take Manhattan!
ReplyDeleteI have been to NYC three times. I absolutely love it! I want to go back, and now that I quilt I want to visit the shops.

I am with you on being shy! Once a camera and mike get in my face, there is no guarantee what will happen! If nothing else, it makes for good home movies and roasting parties. I have never been to NYC and am rather afraid of big cities. I would love to attend a quilt show though and get inspired! duchick at gmail dot com
ReplyDeleteI have been to New York once, and I am going back in November. I am very excited!
ReplyDeletebetsy at fabrichutch dot com
been to NYC a few times, first as a high schooler to the UN 100 years ago...LOL...would love to spend a week seeing all the sights and trying a bona fide NY deli!
ReplyDeleteEven though I grew up 3 hours from NYC, I have only been to NYC three times. I am not much of a city girl.
ReplyDeleteLast visit to the big apple was on my "big" birthday and I need a return visit soon!
ReplyDeleteYes, I have been to NYC - last time was for Christo's Gates in Central Park - just checked that was in 2005. Wow, couldn't agree more: time flies! Thanks for sharing all your wonderful quilt creations with us!
ReplyDeleteYes I have been to NYC on several occasions. I stayed at the Marriot Marquis hotel in Times Square and traveled with friends to visit Soho, Greenwich Village, Ground Zero, Harlem. Never made it to the garment district but I will on my next trip there.
ReplyDeleteI took plenty of public speaking classes in college and participated in Toastmaster's for a couple of years. I use to sweat right through my silk garments when I had to get up in front of others to speak. Now I can do it with more ease even though I may still get nervous. Some of the best public speakers told me they have butterflies sometimes before they speak so I think I am okay.

ReplyDeleteI went to NYC in 2005 for Thanksgiving. The parade was Fantastic! ckhutch at itis dot com
ReplyDeleteI've been to NYC several times, which isn't bad for a western gal, but not since 2010. The 1st time I was 17 and on a cross country trip with my family. The last time was with my married daughter. While I love the "big" cities I also the small town where I live and quilt and enjoy the natural scenery. Thanks. bc_hatsathotmaildotcom

ReplyDeleteI made it to the Big Apple for the first time in November 2014. My cousin flew in from Vegas to meet me from my flight from Wisconsin for a wonderful weekend -- including a stay in Times Square and seeing my quilt as part of the Wicked exhibit before seeing Wicked on Broadway! She even treated me to a trip to the Statue of Liberty. Great trip with a fantastic person.
ReplyDeleteI would love to go back and see more of everything.
I visited NYC once years ago, but I didn't have enough time to see all the sights I wanted. A new trip will be on my bucket list for the future.
ReplyDeleteI have been to NYC 3 or 4 times, but all of them were before I started quilting. QTM is on my bucket list, hopefully within the next couple years. Until then, it would be a thrill to win the swag bag. nkadenver at yahoo dot com
ReplyDeleteIt would be sooo awesome to win a ticket! Never been to NYC. sbarnes 1963 @ att dot net

ReplyDeleteI have been to NYC once. Visit my aunt. Love to win.
ReplyDeleteThis sounds like fun. FIT is always fun to visit. So sad that the City Quilter is closing. Sure wish it could get a ticket.
ReplyDeleteYes, many times. I grew up on Long Island and used to take the train into the city with my girlfriend during high school. Fun times with fond memories.
ReplyDeleteI love to visit FIT. Will miss the City Quilter.
ReplyDeleteI have been to NYC once. BTW, I saw you in person when you were down South. You were so gracious, warm, and approachable.
ReplyDeleteI have been to NYC a couple of times. So many people so close together always blows my mind.
ReplyDeleteI'm very excited for this event as I will be at the show on Sat. I also saw you a couple of years ago at the Quilting By The Lake. You are an excellent speaker and I enjoyed your lecture.
ReplyDeleteVisited with you one of the two times I've been in NYC - I can't wait to be able to visit again.

ReplyDeleteI have been to NYC many years ago (before I was a quilter). I went by myself and am not a big city girl but I loved every minute of my visit. I stayed in Times Square and did all the touristy things. I just received your Meadow Storm fabric yesterday in the mail. It is sooooo BEAUTIFUL and can't wait to cut it up. xenaquilter at earthlink dot net
ReplyDeleteWent to high school in NYC, worked in NYC, now only visit for metro mod meetings and my aunt's 100th birthday party. Always an inspiration, but glad to get home to the woods and geese and quilt buddies in the suburbs.

ReplyDeleteYes, I went to NYC once, more than 20 years ago. I was able to meet up for a short while with college friends. I would love to go again! suhos.su (at) gmail (dot)com (By the way, Victoria, thank you for the fun interview on the Splendid Sampler in Syracuse! I made a pair of 3-D flip flops and didn't realize camera etiquette until I saw the playback. I sometimes do funny things to hide my shyness. Wish I knew when my head was spinning that I was suppose to step out of the way!) I love your Meadow Storm fabrics!
ReplyDeleteI have never been to NYC, but would love to go some day. This event sounds amazing - I would love to see Kaffe Fasset!
ReplyDeleteI have never been to NYC, have never known someone who lives in NYC, until I met you in the class at Empty Spools 2015. You made the city seem like any other small town in America. I'm so glad you overcame your shyness and now share your skills and ideas.
ReplyDeletej dot minyard at sbcglobal dot net
I can also relate to your shyness - I often think if the internet and social media had been around 30 years ago, I might be a bona fide hermit!
ReplyDeleteI am an introvert, so I get it, completely. But to see you I'd never know you are shy, reserved maybe... the big Apple is on my bucket list!

I've been to NYC once complements of my son who is a free lance photographer. He was doing a shoot for Nike. Nike built a skateboard ramp on a barge and you could skateboard out in the water on it, pretty crazy. But what a great town and I even found fabric to buy! I live in WA state so a day flight to get there. thanks for the chance to win a bag of goodies...

ReplyDeleteHaven't been to NY yet but I will be soon and to QTM too. Waiting on info about your 2017 NYC retreat and having faith I can make it. Thanks for the chance to win. (:
ReplyDeleteI was born in NYC! I have not been back in many years, and would love to visit again. It's always been such a great city. So much to do and so many places to go. Thanks for sharing.
ReplyDeleteHmmm, I thought I'd left a comment . . . I've been to NYC six times, but the most recent was in 1996 when the American Library Assn. annual conference was at Javits. (It was a great trip. DH and I flew in on Wed., July 3 -- with July 4 on Thurs., nearly all of Manhattan had vacated for the four-day weekend. It was so easy to get around until everyone came back on Monday. We went to the Cloisters (empty on July 4!) and saw the fireworks from the deck of a tour boat on the East River....And I still have fabric that I bought the afternoon I spent in the Garment District.)
ReplyDeleteI've been to NY but not to hang out and site see in the traditional sense. I need to go Back! Looking forward to doing so someday!
ReplyDeleteMy daughter lives in Brooklyn so yes, I have visited NYC. I love to go there and see the sights. I went to the Empire Quilt Guild quilt show last year and look forward to the show next year. Next time if I see you there I will overcome MY shyness and say hello!

ReplyDeleteIt's true ... all quilts have a story. Mine do. I have poured my heart and soul into every single one.
Quilting is a family heritage. I remember sleeping under my Granny's quilts. After she passed away my mom inherited about 10 unfinished quilt tops. I have since become owner of those quilt tops. A few years ago, I quilted one for my dad for Father's Day. It was extra special -- it was made by his mother and quilted by me. For the label, I used my favorite photo of him and me (at 3 years old). Dad passed away last year. Now, I have his quilt hanging in my living room.
Oh goodness ... I better stop ... Tears are welling up.
I LOVE NY! I know that's a bit cliche', but I do! I LOVE NY! Since a temporary relocation (due to a work assignment) from FL to CT and now NH, we visit as much as we can. I like popping into The City Quilter to explore.
Did I say I LOVE NY? <3
my brother lives in NYC and I love to visit him! I love exploring the City! thanks!

ReplyDeleteWould love to go to NYC to see this!!!Wish I could!!!
ReplyDeleteI do find it hard to believe you are shy, after taking your Design workshop in Lincoln in June. I am the shy one who was working in fairly dull flannels, not even wanting to risk "adventurous" fabrics that might not work well in a public setting! (I did have some more interesting ones that will become part of my quilt when I get back to it. As if anyone else in the class cared what I did. I admire your ability to "be a New Yorker", as I would describe your public image at least. I've been in NYC for business meetings, without much time to do anything except find a few fun places to eat. It's high on the places I'd love to visit (whever I come into money, that is). Thanks for all you do for the quilting world.
