playing with old...

I have this old quilt top I bought somewhere over the years... Each day I walk past and think, "What can I do with it? Up close you'd see it's in horrible shape, and pieced very badly.. holes everywhere, and I think she used embroidery floss on some of the parts to sew it together.

I am quite fond of some of the fabric pairings in the quilt, and I keep thinking inspiration will strike me on what to do with it...
I finally got around to playing a little bit with it! Because I have nothing better to do on holiday...right?
I got out my seam ripper, and started taking one of the blocks apart, to see if I could make a pattern from the pieces...

The pieces are pretty raggedly cut, so it was still a bit of a mess to sew them back to gather...
But I like a good challenge...
I used a white bubbly batik as a background, and well...

It's pretty cute!

Now on to this pretty pink and weird brown!  This may be one of those "lifetime" projects!
What have I started??

  3. I just love my poorly pieced treasures found at garage sales or thrift stores. I cherish every stitch made as best she could with what was at hand. This lady had a great eye for pairing colors and arranging blocks. Wishing you and your family a Happy New Year filled with wonder and adventures. . . . From Lincoln, NE

  7. i started a similar project, a hexie quilt of my mothers. they're appliqued on a ugly brown polyester/cotton. all done by hand but man she had them sewn to with stand time. I get so excited when i see fabric that i have or have used. the yellow floral i have, think i bought yards of it and used it for my first grandchild's nursery. i still love it and have some bits in my stash.good luck on the project

  8. I have a few projects like that and should do just as you are, get some nice new background fabric and pick it apart and put it back together..........I think the maker would smile at you finishing that quilt for them.

  9. This post has touched me! I, too, have a few not-quite-heirloom quilt pieces that I found in the family barn. If only someone would restore it!!! I'll follow along to see how you attack it.
