Old is new again.

After my finished basement flooded in March, Where all my old quilts were stored, many got moldy... So I took them out, and put them in the wash, including this old crazy top... When I took it out of the wash, I saw that the Royal blue fabric had complexity disintegrated. The rest of the dress fabrics were fine. Not wanting to just chuck the top, I wondered what I could do to save it.

Here you can see that the quilt top was made in 1991. Not old, but interesting enough to play with.
The blue fabric is everywhere inside my washing machine and all over my floor...LOL... The embroidery is still intact, so I'm happy to put the old date, back into the new top! Time to cut this up and gov sit new life!

I got out my Havels rotary cutter, and my fat cat ruler, and started cutting and saving as much as I could from the top.... Which was a a lot! I can't believe how many pieces I have!

I definitely have enough to make a large  top out of them, and give this old quilt a new look, and life!

There are some very fun "bits" in these wedge pieces, from the funky dress florals, to some gold beading. The quilter before me, Kept the little details and added them, so I will too!

Now I need to find a setting fabric that will set these Fat Cat's into a brand new lovely quilt...
Old (ish) and new... live happily, together!  Finding that perfect setting fabric... hmmm, will that be difficult?
Maybe shirtings, would do the trick.

;-)
I'm sooooo loving these!

  3. Oh my gosh - Deja vu! Just two days ago, I pulled a vintage quilt out of my closet. It looks almost identical to yours. Silky dress fabrics cut into big chunks with hand-stitched quilting lines, except mine has disintegrated black fabrics. I was trying to decided what to do with it and now I know! Thanks so much for the inspiration. I can't wait to see how yours turns out!

  6. Good for you for tackling this creative salvage mission! My house flooded twice last October and I did SO MUCH WASH! Biz was my biggest laundry ally. I don't know how it would do for wildly multi colored and varied fiber content things but my white linen vintage nightgown that had nasty mold and mildew stains on it washed completely clean. Funny about that rogue blue fabric in your quilt. Can't wait to see what you do.

  8. It looks like 1941 to me, not 1991.
