First Steps to FMQ blog tour!

A fun new book by Christina of a Few scraps! Welcome to the BOOK BLOG HOP!
I love seeing other bloggers who have put their pen to paper for a new book on machine quilting, It's one thing I am continually trying to better myself at!  Christina has put together a book on machine quilting on your home machine.  I love that she is building confidence and sharing her skills with all of us.  I know for a fact, if I can DRAW it, I can QUILT it. That's how I learned to do feathers... and She gives loads of great tips on machine issues as well as ideas to to try and build your skills...

I asked her why she wanted to write the book she says,
I wrote the book because from teaching free motion quilting on my blog it became clear that quilters need a low stress way to practice FMQ without risking their cherished quilt tops. Simple little projects to get them excited about stitching. Most FMQ books focus on technique. This one focuses on practice. That's the way you get better at FMQ: practice, practice, practice. I decided I wanted to make practice fun!

And you  know I am all about FUN! Quilting is meant to be FUN! Right!?
Right indeed! Her catch phrase at the moment sums it up!
Lay down some thread!

Now, that is what I am talking about! ;-) ha ha!

  1. How about all of the above. I've quilted a few, paid for several, have one in hand quilt process, but usually mine are done by machine. A girl has to be flexible! :)

  2. I quilt my own but only straight line quilting....I am very anxious about free motion quilting. I want to learn but still hesitate to try on a big project. I am so excited about this book!

  3. I quilt my own- usually straight line by machine, occasionally I hand quilt!

  4. I've always had to quilt my own as long-arm is just way to expensive over here. I make a lot of quilts to donate and 'practice' new patterns on them! Once you've done a lap-sized quilt with a pattern, you've got that pattern in the muscle memory!!! Would love to be in the draw to win a copy of Christina's new book as you can never learn too much :)

  5. Just bought a Juki machine..... This would be the perfect partner!

  6. When I machine quilt myself I have straight lines. I also hand quilt. Thanks for the giveaway!

  7. Just started quilting my own so need to learn new skills fast lol.

  8. I machine quilt my own - straight stitches and would love to try free motion! thanks!

  9. I quilt my own, both machine and hand quilt. When I first started quilting I never even thought have someone else quilt it. I love to learn new techniques, though. :)

  10. I love to FMQ on my home machine and I am always looking to try more designs and improve my skill.
Thanks for sharing all that you do.

  11. I don't want to be in the drawing as I have the book, but can I just say - it is excellent. And I love that you are promoting it in the hop!

  12. I would love the book!! I quilt non stop....by hand; learning to machine quilt. I bought a Tiara

  13. I have been trying to FMQ in various ways. I have had some success but lots of frustrations. I have so many quilt ideas but I feel if I don't finish them and get them out there ( to local charities or what not) that it is not complete. My home machine is limiting because my skill is so limited. I love the look of machine quilting.

  14. Of course, I would love my quilting to be fearless! Might get more done! Would love the book!

  15. I mostly machine quilt on my DSM. I like to hand quilt too, but only in the winter, when it makes sense to snuggle under the quilt I'm quilting. (I live in Florida, and even with air conditioning, it's too hot to hold a quilt in my lap any other time of the year.) I've quilted by check occasionally, and rented time on the long arm at my LQS. So I guess you could say I've done it all! Love the chance to win a copy of the book.

  16. I do small quilts on my DSM, and quilt larger quilts on my grace frame with a Juki 2010. I've never quilted by check (but have been tempted a few times!).

  18. I quilt my own on the diagonal on my domestic machine. I have done several large quilts, and I would like to learn how to do the free motion. Christina's book looks like it is easy to follow with good illustrations. Sending them out to be quilted is beyond my limited budget.

  19. I've always only quilted my own, mostly straight line and a little FMQ. The last quilt I made was 65x65 and I Free motioned the entire quilt on my domestic !! I would definitely live to improve my skills. Thank you for the opportunity.

  20. Oh, I need this book! I quilt my own, on a sweet little Janome Magnolia. Mostly I do straight line, because I've only been at this a year, but I have tried some FMQ and would *love* to get better at it. This book sounds like a genius idea and just what is needed to truly learn FMQ.

  21. I don't enjoy FMQ, but I know this is partly due to fear. Help!

  23. I do quilt my own....the price is right. I have had three quilts long armed by others when they were made for gifts. I can meander ok, but do need to increase my ability to quilt other patterns.

    ReplyDelete
  24. I quilt all my own quilts. Special ones get hand quilted and there are not many of them. I do a lot of meandering on the rest of my quilts. I think it is time to step it up a notch.

    ReplyDelete
  25. I quilt my own quilts and am always looking for new ideas. I have a hard time starting a quilt and knowing what to quilt besides meandering.

    ReplyDelete
  38. I mainly hand quilt but would love to learn how to FMQ!

    ReplyDelete
  39. I do most of my own quilting by machine, but lately have been sending out my QS ones as they are just too unwieldly to do on my home machine and it takes me longer to quilt one than to piece one, so I'd rather piece at that point... Thanks so much for sharing. i would love to win a copy.

  49. I am just learning to quilt my own quilts on my home machine. I'm ready to branch out into some curvy shapes (gulp). Trying to let go of perfection and just enjoy the process and results. Thanks for your inspiring blog.

  50. I've done small projects on my Juki (LOVE THE JUKI!!!) and I had my first outsourced quilting done by a friend. Yikes! That is a pricey endeavor. I hope to quilt all my own projects on my machine (which is why I chose the Juki) but I need help and guidance and practice. Yep, I am a great candidate for this book....

    ReplyDelete
  51. I've got a longarm, but my FMQ skills need to be improved as well. Learning how to do feathers well is something everyone should be able to do.

  70. I quilt on my domestic machine... and often wish I had a long-arm. I've got several tops binned for when I feel my skills are up to the task of quilting them as well as they deserve. Great swirly stars: would love to explore what other great ideas are lurking between the covers of the book.

  81. All of the above but it has been years since I used FMQ and I am reluctant to start again - scary. I have just straight line quilted my first quilt in a very long time - a baby quilt for my new nephew. The process was very enjoyable and has inspired me to quilt more of my own.

    ReplyDelete
  82. I hand quilt and if that is not practical, then I "quilt by check." But I would love to learn to free motion quilt. I have an older machine without all the bells and whistles of the new machines, so it terrifies me to try.

  83. My sister-in-law quilts for me but I can only ask for so many jobs! It is slowing my quilting down so I better get better!

    ReplyDelete
  84. I have tried FMQ on my machine, but need a lot more practice since I have had issues with bunching. For now I FMQ on a longarm rental. I would love to save some money and quilt on my machine at home and would like to learn new patterns.

    ReplyDelete
  85. I quilt all of mine by machine. Only one has been done by hand...the first one...LOL. For years I used my DSM but now I have a HQ Sweet 16 and just love it. And I agree...if I can draw it I can quilt it...and I usually do. Thanks for the opportunity to win this book!

    ReplyDelete
  89. I quilt my own, mostly by machine these days. Would love to win this book and improve my skills. Thanks so much for the giveaway!

  104. Well....I've had a terrible time quilting anything but straight lines, and even appliqueing has been a chore (even though I have that in my 'genes,' having watched my parents applique by machine for all of my growing up.) I just found out that my poor Bessie has had a crooked needle post the whole time I've had her. She's already more limber with the adjustment, but I'm dying to try some fmq, in a coaxing and fun way!

    ReplyDelete
  105. Rented some time on a long arm and took an old tied quilt and loaded it and practiced away. Whoa, that first hour was quite wonky. By the third hour I was gaining more control. But realized if I want to machine quilt I have to learn to do it on my home machine, because renting time is too expensive and I was rushing to get it done before my time was up. It was okay and a learning experience, but mastering it at home is what I have to do.

    ReplyDelete
  106. I have only done straight line quilting before and am just getting into FMQ. I've been practicing on Christmas gifts as I make them because my family won't know the difference between good and bad stitches, but I'd love to have other inspiration for projects and some great advice from such an awesome teacher! Thanks for the chance!

  107. I do enjoy hand quilting however it does take time (lots of time). I have machined quilted a couple of quilts but only straight lines (and not ally as straight as they should be). My pile of quilt tops are growing and would LOVE to be more confident in quilting them myself!!!!

  138. I machine quilt my smaller quilts, and pay someone to quilt the larger ones on a longarm. Thanks for the giveaway!

  139. I quilt my own quilts on my Bernina, but I haven't done any quilting lately. I have probably 20 quilt tops of various sizes ready to quilt and most of them are bed-size. I need to get busy.

  140. I do a mix of both - quilting my own and sending them off. The smaller quilts I can quilt simply on my machine at home, but anything over a twin is such a headache :) I'm a straight line quilter right now - I'm chicken when it comes to FMQ - I know I just need to jump in, but it's nerve wracking, lol!

  141. I quilt on my domestic machine or rent time on a long arm machine for quilting large quilts.
I love to FMQ on the long arm - really fun! I'd love to win a copy of this book. Thanks for the
    chance!

  145. I've been a hand quilter until recently, took a long-arm class then rented it to quilt a quilt, but really think that FMQ on a home machine might be the best of both worlds.

  146. I haven't done anything other than straight line quilting. I need this book! I have a new free motion quilting foot for my machine and have only tried it once…..help! Thanks for the give away!

  148. Quilt your own? YES
    Hand quilt? YES
    Machine quilt? YES
    quilt by check? YES

I love all - but I could really use some guidance to get better at machine quilting. Thanks!

  149. I always used to quilt by check. Now I machine quilt mine, mostly straight lines. But I really want to explore FMQ and need some guidance!

  151. Christina is an awesome teacher and I'd love a copy of her book to build my skills!

  152. I have been afraid of ruining quilts so have straight line quilted very small quilts only. Time to get on with bigger and better or I will have to continue to quilt by check which leaves most things unquilted and undone. UGh! Dianne at gdavidhoffmanatyahoodotcom

  153. I quilt some things, but not very well so I have most projects stacked up waiting to be quilted. I want to do it myself so that it is all my work, but I don't quilt as well as I piece and appliqué so they languish waiting for a miracle advancement in my quilting skill.

  154. I machine my own. Sometimes I'm happy with the results. Sometimes I want to rip it all out (but we all know that will never happen). Always looking for fresh ideas on FMQ! svonfumetti(at)yahoo(dot)com

  155. Hey Victoria, I machine quilt my own but am always looking for ideas!!!

  156. I can't sew a straight seam. I send them out to be quilted. Love to give it a try, though.

  157. I haven't finished a lot, but untill now I've only handquilted. I would love to win a copy (e-book) so I can try FMQ myself.

  158. This looks like one awesome book and I really want to win a copy! I quilt my own, I have never sent one out, but I may someday. I usually decide on how I am going to quilt it when I am basting it and it's all laid out on the floor. I just visualize how I want it to look then I simply go for it! I am still a beginner at FMQ, I have only done two quilts, and there is for sure room for improvement but I will get better. It's fun, and that makes me happy :)

  160. I quilt my own projects, but I am strictly a stitch in the ditch kind of gal. I have been trying to branch out and learn to FMQ. None of it has been pretty so far, but I keep trying.

  163. I looked through that book the other day at a friends house, it is a wonderful guide to machine quilting on a regular machine. I plan on getting one!

  164. I do basic quilt in the ditch machine quilting (straight lines are so easy) & I'm trying to improve my FMQ. I'm also trying out hand quilting. I am good at finishing the quilt top, but I'm slow to get the rest of it down. I would love a chance to win this book so I can build & improve my skills.

  165. Yes, I want this book! I'm fearless when it comes to an overall meander FMQ, and I'll follow a drawn line, but other FMQ shapes scare me!
