On Point quilt

My ON POINT (now named 'Secret Garden' thanks to my daughter)  quilt has been sitting here for ages, just waiting for binding to call it finished...  Finally last night I put the binding on it.  I can tell you that binding is my favorite part to a quilt, those last few stitches making it complete is just the BEST feeling!  (I have 8 more here that need binding... I may feel differently by them time I get them all done)

I made this quilt a while back, and have shown it a few times here... I used scraps to fussy cut flowers and even begged and borrowed LIGHT squares from many of you, to make the setting blocks. This quilt was my jump back into applique again after many years of avoiding it... It was also my ''Take along''project that I could do from anywhere...  I need another project like this.

I thought I would only make one block, then I liked it so much, so I made another, then and another, and then, well, I just had so much fun with it.

The colors are probably not something I would have ever planned out ahead of time, but with each block, I stuck them up on the wall to see what color was sticking out or disappearing, what needed more boost, and tried to balance them all.

Sadly this is NOT a king size quilt!  So it does not fit on my bed. (what was I thinking?)

I can see myself starting another applique project like this to carry along with me.

Do you have a carry along project?

Tell me about it, I need some ideas. ;-)

  1. that is cute - yes I have a take along project. Right now I have a small quilt that I am hand quilting that is a good size to take to quilt groups to work on and I have a table runner that needs applique on it that I will be prepping to take along in the car when we drive to Wisconsin for Thanksgiving. I can work on that when I'm not taking a turn driving and in the motel the one night there and back. Doubt I will get around to any quilting while visiting family.

  2. Congratulations on another finish! I think it has a sort of old fashioned look to it. I don't like hand work and quilts are too big to take along to bind. I really need to find some hand sewing I like.

  3. You are so creative!!! I haven't seen this one before - it's wonderful. My favorite take along project was my yo-yo quilt. I carried those little circles around for about 3 years while my kids were in middle and high school. They are very addicting and take such a little amount of fabric.

  4. lovely !!!! I have some of that green/purple caladium print - it's a fabulous piece of fabric... adds depth to everything I put it in... unfortunately it's about to be gone.

  5. It reminds me of my beautiful wall hanging in the other room! My take along is embroidery or applique.

  6. I have been auditioning take along projects. I have discovered that I don't like yoyos or hexies, so those are out. Lately, I have been hand quilting small projects and doing some applique. So far, I am enjoying those two things for take along.

  7. Gorgeous! Love your binding and backing choices, and the blocks are stunning.

My take-along project was hexies, but it has finally grown to couch-only size. Lately my portable projects have been crocheting; maybe I'll try hand-quilting some minis...

  8. Interesting quilt, I like how the pieced background sets off the flowers. I have several take alongs... A small doll sized quilt made of hexies that should be hand quilted and done by the holidays, an appliqué border for a pieced quilt body that is seemingly taking FOREVER, and a set of BOM appliqués put out by Erin Russek that I am several blocks behind on and a crazy quilt that I work on the embroidery and "fancy stuff" on while I am away from my machine (that one hasn't seen the light of day in a while!). Do get yourself another project, maybe something with the beads from Houston!

  9. Love your Secret Garden Quilt! Congrats on a FINISH! Wish I had your binding mojo - probably could donate more BASIC quilts if it wasn't for the binding...
Carry along project: I knit socks all the time. Some self striping yarn, no complicated pattern, perfect! Most of my socks have been done during (yet) another flight or at airports.

  10. I LOVE this quilt! Fun to see your older work. Tell Beatrice I think it would look good in her room.

  11. Everything about this quilt is beautiful - the squares, the flowers and leaves and the stems - I absolutely love it. Yes, it's good to do the binding. As for a carry along project, like Barb in MI above, I knit socks in self-patterned wools to wear at home in winter and to wear when out walking. You can knit and chat easily at the same time as there is no pattern.

  13. Oh, that's gorgeous! Binding is my favorite part, too. That's when it start to feel like a real quilt.

I don't have a carry along project right now -- I should really think about that.

  14. Love the quilt! I definitely need to do an applique on pieced blocks. My current take along is hand pieced HST. The squares (pre-marked with the diagonal stitching line), thread, needles and little scissors fit into a sandwich size bag.

  15. My take along is applique. I'm working on Beyond the Cherry Tree, a 25 BOM that has tons of little circles on it. So I precut my fabric and paper circles and do the edge basting and make the berries. I've got a bag of them, ready for the border. One block had 120+ grapes, it went fast 'cus the grapes were all ready to go.

  16. Oooh, I love this quilt, Victoria! I too need a bring along project - other than knitting. I have previously done a few English paper piecing projects, but got so hooked that I stitched on them whenever I got a chance. Maybe it's time to dig out those templates, it's a great way to use scraps.

  17. Secret Garden is so descriptive! Those Kaffe roses and leaves add a touch of mystery to those otherwise traditional blocks. You are taking applique in a new direction, you know. What next?

  20. I have a gajillion carry along projects. That way I never get bored! You need to make some yo-yos to carry along. I'm writing a tutorial just for you, since I never did get around to showing you one in Houston!
