were at the Newark Museum today, we first viewed the Film Stitched, then had a round table discussion about the controversies in the quilt world... traditional, art quilters, quilters who thread paint, or paint on fabric and no piecing, and modern etc.. the whole wide range. People so love to talk about it, instead of just being happy about CREATING! We also had some show and tell and talked a bit about our process, and our quilts... It was an interesting talk, and had some great questions from the audience.
Have you seen the film?
Mark made this... ( no, not really) he was pulling his funny tricks... He's doing his Vanna impersonation...
We took a tour around the Museum's current Quilt exhibit. They have about 160 quilts at the Museum Collection. The show is a sampling of some of those quilts on display.
Check out the hand stitching.... Yum!Glorious paper pieced Hex's
Stunning silks and brocades!
The most amazing hand quilting....
What a FUN QUILT-Y day!
So, if you were to pick one of these as your next quilt project,
which would it be and why?
The colorful one at the top with the hand stitching. Looks so free and fun. :) Thanks for sharing all of these pics. Looks like a great time!
ReplyDeleteSounds like you had a fun day!! I wish I had known you were going to be there. I did see the film and thought it was fun to watch. Love Mark's, I mean the quilt he is showing!
ReplyDeleteIn answer to your question - the one Mark is doing his Vanna White impression on>
ReplyDeleteI've been wanting to watch the film, just haven't found a way to get to yet. If I had to pick a next project from all those . . . hmm . . . altho it's a difficult decision, I think I'd go with the silk/brocade pinwheel sampler one . . . LOVE it!
ReplyDeleteGreat show! The silk one looks like it could be a Victoria quilt.
ReplyDeleteI would have to choose Mark's/Vanna's quilt. Because I have always wanted to play with stripes.
ReplyDeleteI am also terribly green with envy. To be able to view the film, join the round table discussion and last, but not the least of all least ~ meet Luke Haynes. And Victoria of course.
Thanks for sharing your incredible day.
Turkey red and white-why? hand quilting and hand applique. I do like the medallion type (last photo) Quilt. I have a commemorative silk piece from the V&A quilt exhibit that I could put in the center. I like how the borders are added a chopped off.
ReplyDeletei love the warped/not square one with the hand stitching. awesome, it's going on my list.
ReplyDeleteI really like the one Mark is next to and the silk one. Wish I could have been there to see the film and listen to the discussion. What a great event.
ReplyDeleteGreat quilts! If I were going to chose one for my next project it would be the hand stitched square because it is just so different from what I do and it would be fun to try. How about you?
ReplyDeleteBefore you asked the question, I was already saying...."I need to make that silks and brocade one!" I just love it.....it's full of pinwheels, and squares in a squares, and broken dishes.....all my favorite blocks in one! Yay! And the setting is so powerful.....makes a huge statement!
ReplyDeleteI love everything about it!
The red & white hand appliqued and quilted. Because it's what I do. And because it's so intensely satisfying to be around when it's done.
ReplyDeleteWhat a fun day! Would make a version of the one with the stitching because I need to improve my handwork and want to quilt well with perle cotton some day. Watched the film and found it interesting but was saddened by the discord between the traditionalists and contemporary quilters- the Art vs. Craft conflict. Personally feel there should be room and respect for everybody in the quilty world!
ReplyDeleteThanks for sharing your awesome day! Yes, I've seen the film, and may view a second time if I ever get the DVD back from my sister. I'd make the silk pinwheels... not from silk, and possible not with any pinwheels, but I have a couple stray blocks I'd like to make a medallion quilt or two around, with a bunch of pieced borders made up as I go along...
ReplyDeleteI got to watch Stitched through The Quilt Show. Very enjoyable.
ReplyDeleteWhile I totally admire the workmanship in all those quilts, the one that speaks to me is the wonky hand stitched stripy one.
Thanks for sharing these lovely quilts, love the silk quilt! I guess using dupion silk would be easier to quilt with and would give it a lovely texture, this is giving me some good ideas now...
ReplyDeleteWhat a lovely fun day. I love hearing people talk about quilts. I would choose the silk one with the triangles and pin wheels, it's beautiful. I've got a little stash of silk, so maybe ...?
ReplyDeleteWhat an awesome way to spend a day. I have not seen the film. The quilts are all so beautiful yet different. I love the medallion/scrappy with the silk brocades.
ReplyDeleteI did watch Stitched, thanks to The Quilt Show. It was amazing, however, it strengthened my reasons for never wanting to enter a quilt in a competition. LOL. The work there was amazing.
ReplyDeleteI would love to make one like the quilt showing the close up of the hand quilting. No plan, just use whatever you grab next. AND it looks delicious!
I own the dvd, "Stitched", and have watched it a number of times, like it very much.
ReplyDeleteMy favorite of those you high lighted from at the museum is the silks and brocade, gorgeous.
Annie
I go along with Jessica. Want to do a warped one with big stitches, because it frees me up from the many quilt rules I have learned in my lifetime. I also want to parasail!
ReplyDeleteIt would be the scrappy one with the wavy edges, it looks like it is lovely to snuggle under.
ReplyDeleteYes i have seen the film. And i loved it. It was so interesting to hear all those opposing views!?
ReplyDeletei would love to have a go at the multi coloured scrap quilt with the hand stitching. Beautiful. Which would you try??
Please tell us more about the film...is it only available on The Quilt Show (doesn't sound like it - guess I could google it - duh). Now for my quilt choice - I would pick the "warped" one with scraps and large stitching. It is a happy quilt and one that would let my spirit fly. Thanks for the fun day in NJ!!
ReplyDeleteWow, thanks for the pictures for those of us who won't be able to see the exhibit in person! The one you've labelled as made from silk and brocade is totally my style, the sort of thing I would naturally make (but not in those fabrics probably!). But I have to say that the string quilt, the hand quilted giant log cabin, really appeals too. I thought I was going to do a version of what Tonya Ricucci is calling her Lego quilt but I think now that my strips are going to go into something more like the quilt you've shown here.
ReplyDeleteI would like to to do the handstitched quilt. I have never done one myself. That quilt has given me some inspiration. ;)
ReplyDeleteEven before you asked, the wonky handstitched quilt got me to thinking that I'd like to add hand stitching to my Christmas gifts this year - it adds such a personal, homey touch. But for a quilt project, I'd go for the brocades/silk design, but in cottons. I love medallion styles, and I also love the idea of not making every block the same in a big quilt - rather tedious! and ai love how the different block designs and riot of color add so much movement. Great post!
