mmmm, corduroy!

LeeAnn is celebrating National Corduroy Day. How fun is that? She sent A funky piece of Corduroy to inspire/Challenge the Rebels group, and So I've been staring at this waiting to decide what I wanted to make with it... I am fighting the urge to go buy more Corduroy...

I only have PINK and RED here... What a combo that would make! Hey Ya never know!

Did you know there is even a CLUB for corduroy lovers?

I've been a fan of Corduroy quilts for ages... My FAVORITE quilt growing up was RED corduroy with Indian cotton... It was our SICK blanket when I was a child. If we were sick and home from school, we got to snuggle in that quilt... My daughter now has it on her bed... It's so soft, and I've had to repair the Indian cotton several times...  It's her favorite now. ;-)
Since that quilt is about 40 years old, one of the first quilts I made when I started quilting seriously, 4 years or so ago, was this quilt, ''CHICKEN SOUP GET WELL SOON.''  Tonya had a ''House, Home, and Pantry'' challenge at the time, and I knew right away I wanted to make a NEW ''SICK'' quilt... And I also backed it with RED corduroy... I started hand quilting it. bu tit was insane to attempt, so I machine quilted it, and it comes out every time someone is sick... Nothing like being snuggled in Healing thoughts!

I recently backed this Christmas quilt in a plaid corduroy... Christmas and corduroy... They just go together, don't they?

So I need to decide if I want to use all corduroy or mix fabrics for my project with the lovely green print... I hope to have something by 11-11-11...  I better get cracking!  Even better, I'd like to have something to bring when I seethe rebels in November... Think I better run to good will now!

Besides, that, my design wall is nearly empty!   I have two projects in stages but I am waiting for FABRIC to finish them both... So for now it's just a PARTS DEPARTMENT... Stay tuned!

Note to self: Shouldn't wear sticky lycra when sewing... I'm a magnet for quilt droppings...  Wish I had a giant roll of masking tape to roll around on to clean myself up!

Have a fabulous day!

And YES!  I got TWO of my three machine's back! Wahoo! I'm off to sew!

Have you a favorite quilt from childhood that You wish you still had or DO still have?
What made it so special to you?

  1. I knew that you couldn't resist LeeAnn's challenge. After quilting the quilt with the corduroy backing, I knew that there was more in your future. As for the masking tape, get the lint rollers in bulk at Costco, BJ's, or Sam's club. Really they have them in bulk, trust me I have purchased them!!

  2. I use corduroy all of the time. I've used it in quilts and bags! Get one of those sticky pet roller thingys and keep it by your machine. Comes in very handy.

  3. Thanks to LeeAnn, I made a corduroy quilt. Had some luscious chocolate brown wide wale in the attic...don't remember how it got there... which is now a cozy lap warmer. I used flannel on the back to make it stick to my legs..... and also to collect all my quilt droppings. It is my new favorite quilt.

  4. Only quilt I had was a wedding gift from my great-aunt, before I started quilting. It was wool rectangles with decorative embroidery on all the seams and had flannel backing. Unfortunately, ex-fiance used it in the bottom of a tent and it rotten from the dampness, before I found out what he had done.

  5. So glad you're in the spirit! I'll post links to all the corduroy quilts I'm aware of on 11-11-11.

    Wear those strings proudly!

  6. I love corduroy too! As a child we were lucky to have one blanket for our beds and they were Army blanket in a lovely Army green. I have no idea where my parents got them, but with 7 kids in 12 years you made due. There may be a couple of them left at my Dad's house - I don't know. I did not know what a quilt was until I was in my mid-20's.

  7. Can you imagine a cordoroy, flannel and denim patchwork quilt for those cold days on the couch ??? Probably backed by a simple one of those fleece pieces on the back..I think the Fatquartershop sells them as "snuggle packs"

  8. When I find quilt droppings on my clothes, or find someone picking the threads off from their clothes I often say, " We are quilters. We wear our threads with pride!" ;-o

  9. I don't have a quilt from childhood as my mom says we wore out the ones Grandma and the ladies at church made. I do have a section of embroidery from a bedspread and other bits of textiles. They are all special because they remind me of my family. I do have quilts I made for my kids and a couple were called "sick quilts". I didn't think many people used that term. They were soft and comfy and just made you feel better when you weren't really feeling well. I think you need one of those disposable lint rollers next to your sewing machine. My friends teased me because I discovered them about a year ago. They laughed because I thought I had found something really cool and they, including my daughter, had been using them for sometime. LOL! I love corduroy, soft, soft corduroy and there's a corduroy quilt on my drawing board that I must do. Along with a gajillion other "must do's". :-)

  10. The small or medium sized lint rollers work wonders. We can get them for a couple of dollars in the supermarket here. Great for getting lint threads etc off clothing. ( they have a roll of sticky tape that gets peeled off to the next strip when all covered in threads. )

  11. Love the quilt on your clothes. Last week we had painters here. I went outside to talk with them after spending the morning sewing. Fisrt question from one was "Hey, are you are quilter? You look just like my wife does when she's working on a quilt." I looked down and sure enough, little threads all over me. I wonder if there's a six degrees from a quilter game out there.

  12. Corduroy + Sick just gave me a flashback to 6th grade when I got chicken pox. I noticed after my mom left for work but before I had to leave from school. Mom told me not to scratch and that my brother would go get calamine lotion for me. I sat on my hands and arms so I wouldn't scratch and when my brother arrived, I had stripes and dots. I was wearing my favorite corduroy pants.

  14. I want to make a sick quilt, too! I started one in flannels a while back, but then lost interest. I may start again. Thanks for the inspiration.
