old and cold

COLD: We've dropped in temps, so we are in the "October freeze" in our loft... Steam heat does not get turned on until the 15th of October, so I am quilting today, with three layers of clothing and a scarf on around my neck... It's usually ends up being warmer outside, then inside my loft...  So I sit here, quilting the LARGE king sized kids quilt, which keeps me warm, as most of it's piled in my lap!

PLUS OLD:  Besides being cold, I feel VERY OLD today... I'm using that clear invisible thread, and I can NOT thread my needle with that stuff! I spend more time trying to see the darn thread! LOL!   My mother left a pair of her "cheater" glasses here, I had to dig them out, so I could actually get some work done today... Ha!  Have not needed glasses yet. This doesn't count, right? Or is this my first sign of old age?

I am however, feeling very clever that I finally got around to buying NEW BLADES for my rotary cutters!
Are you as bad as I am? I wait forever before I change my blades...mostly out of being lazy...
I should pay more attention to it... It does actually make cutting easier, (duh!) and saves my wrists and shoulders!
I don't think my blades would even cut paper, they are so bad...sigh...

  1. Try marking the end of your thread with a sharpie. It would make it easier to see. Snip that part off before you sew it into your quilt.

  2. put your finger behind the needle hole and then push the thread into your finger, works for me!
ok the rotary blades I change a lot, my arm /shoulder will start hurting if I have to work hard to cut fabric, so not worth having to stop sewing for a few weeks to let it heal....
trust me new blades are worth it!

  4. It's pretty cold here in Hatfield Pa also. Since mt house is surrounded in the back by trees it's always colder than the outside.
I have to laugh about the glasses. I have a pair or two Iin every room and usually a pair around my neck.

  5. I just finished quilting a quilt with lots of black texture prints and I used smoke monopoly. I am totally blind now!

  6. Use a needle threader. The kind you use for threading sewing needles.

    Wet and horrid here.

  7. I've worn glasses since 3rd grade, and now (in my late-ish 40's) I have to remove them to read or see anything close to me (which is INCREDIBLY annoying).

    STAY WARM!!

  8. I have the same machine and I use the needle threader feature on the machine....seems to do the trick!

  9. Oops! Just noticed that I have the newer model (TL-2010Q)....maybe yours doesn't have the threader feature!?!

  10. I don't know how you do anything when you are cold.....give yourself credit for your perseverance and great work ethics! Hey wearing glasses has given me the ability to do many things I could not do without them......they are a good thing :0). I'm convinced that in times before glasses people died because they had accidents from not being able to see!
Of course we all know you are only as old as you feel...just keep telling yourself how young and happy you are and keep on SEWING :0)

  11. I used to "sew" until I could not see to thread the needle and then call it good...
If I did that now I would never get any sewing done...
I have cheaters on a neck chain,,,,

  12. I have worn glasses since I was 4.75 years old and I should have had them before that. I was in the first grade (yes, the first grade!) and I could not see the blackboard from the first row of seats. The teacher moved my desk against the blackboard and then I could read it. No, I could not see a car coming down the street - I would listen to hear a car before I crossed. My mom said she wondered why I was so clumsy! Heck, I couldn't see! I wear MagEyes all the time while I sew along with my prescription eyeglasses - the MagEyes have changed my sewing life for the better! I would not be able to sew without them.

About being cold - my lower level is cold so while I sew I sit on a heating pad. With wool socks and a polar fleece jacket I stay nice and toasty!

  13. When I went to the eye Dr in my 30s, he said I'll see you when you're 40. I swear on that very day I needed reading glasses!

  14. If you need to thread a needle for hand work, City Quilter sells these neat needle-threaders by Clover. I hate to admit that I need this, but boy does it ever save me aggravation.

  15. I don't change my blades until the dull edges are literally embedding thread and lint in the cutting mat. Not smart - so much wasted effort!

  16. I am like Patty A. But I was 7 when they put prisms in my glasses so I could see right, tunnel vision is no fun. I have readers in the prescription ones now. Coke bottles but I am grateful to see! Temps have dropped here in WV, ice in the outside water bucket. Yuck! Dress warm, I laugh at what Patties wearing because I am wearing that right now and long johns! I need new blades you all made me realize why!

  17. I had to dig out the smart wool socks I was so cold the other day, even broke down and put on the heat. Strange to think I was put in a tank top just a week ago. And I am the same with my blades, it's not that I don't have extras around, I am just lazy about changing them. And whenever I do change them I seem to cut myself within the first day.

  18. Cold and very wet here! Fortunately we have heating :). And it's been on a while! Yep guilty of not changing my blade, and being totally surprised at how easy it is after! And I too, like Kim, love my glasses. :). Stay warm and snuggled x

  19. I think needing cheater glasses was my first sign - it's not so bad. Glad you've got a warm project to work on.

  20. O.K. we all agree glasses not so bad and change the blades. Now about the weather. Snow and road closures within an hour of Sydney. Remember it DOES NOT SNOW in Sydney and only rarely in the surrounding mts. It's spring and I have the heating on. The kids quilt is looking good.

  21. Wearing glasses is not OLD it just means you need to wear glasses......some folks start at age three.....

  22. Mimi, of course.
Being one who hasn't needed needed glasses, I'm having a little poke at myself and my own limitations... just being silly.

  23. I do change blades often...but! I buy them from the local hardware store! I get 2 for $1.49! They are the same size, thickness, and everything! They are called carpet blades! (However they have a round center so they fit in Fiscar cutters but not Olaf) I figure if I save a little on my blades I have more for fabric!
