Polyester dreams

My new POLYESTER wardrobe…
Yes, I collect polyester quilts… perhaps you saw the Story in Generation Q magazine with my mug on the cover?

Well, My partner in that article, Bill Volckening, had this polyester patchwork jacket and thought, Victoria's must have this! (of course I'd be thrilled to have it, and possibly even wear it.)  I have to say, I just might have to do that! It's even lined so that spongey scratchy polyester is only on the outside. ;-) sweet!

You can see how sleeping under my grandmother's quilts as a child really rubbed off on my color palette in my quilts, right? The colors will never FADE! Nor will it deteriorate! LOL!  I think I can totally rock this… Don't you think? be prepared.. If you take a class with me, you just might see me in this jacket. Thanks BILL!   You weren't the only one this week who thought I needed some polyester clothing…. read on.

A few days before, My friend Diane, swung by to hand deliver a polyester SUN DRESS for me!  ROFL! Can you Believe this?  I'm not sure I can get this one on…  It just makes me giggle, so much!

Check out how the Top in an oval shape stitched onto the top of the skirt… But wait, it gets better….

The elastic around the edges to keep it altogether is actually re-purposed from yet another piece of clothing… and a clothing tag from another garment with size was added… But look closer…

A BELT BUCKLE, from the elastic they used is still intact and was sewed INTO the dress…
that should hit me right about my belly button. Comfortable!  hahahah! Isn't it hilarious?
Oh, it's not hard to amuse me… I absolutely love it...

And, just this week, I was playing in my own, 40 gallon bin of polyester fabrics . Jealous aren't you?

ROFL… hahahah!

These two don't seem to be amused…

Hope I amused you on this FRIDAY!!!! Happy weekend!
Have fond or funny stories of Polyester in your past?

  1. I have a good polyester story for you. My grandmother passed away about 5 years ago now. She was a great seamstress and made all of her clothing. When she passes away, I inherited her button bag and I love looking through it and the smell reminds me of her. I worried about losing the smell that reminds me so much of her. Then one day I was working with vintage sheets. My iron hit the fabric and boom, the smell of my grandmother's house hit me! It was polyester! She made all her clothes from poly blends so they didn't wrinkle.

  2. You have a kindred spirit here in Arizona. Last year I attended a local quilt show and saw the polyester quilt collection from Gail Van Horsen. See post: http://cactus-needle.blogspot.com/2013/04/double-knit-quilts.html. Honestly! You two need to meet!

  4. My sad story is that I wore so many polyester double knits in the 60's and 70's that I developed an allergy...to ironing!

  5. I have a double-knit quilt that my grandma made for me when I graduated high school. I LOVE it - it is my go-to cover up for really cold nights, because it is so heavy and warm :)

  6. Loving the jacket - looks great on you - not so sure about the dress!! I remember going to the Crimplene factory with my mum in the early 70s. From the fabrics bought she would make something for herself, something for me and from the scraps an outfit for my teddy. Still have the teddy and some of it's outfits somewhere :)

Enjoying the stories from your readers, too.

  8. I have 2 family double knit quilt tops, and another whole lap quilt made out of double knit. The lap quilt was used at soccer practices and games. It's survived hundreds of washings, and doesn't look any worse for the wear. Hey, I just found out that you will be here, at one of my guilds in July (Pride of the Prairie). See you then.

  11. Story teller Elizabeth Ellis has a wonderful story about the time her mother made her a polyester quilt. Her Mother had a stash of her Grandmothers quilts in the closet upstairs. When Elizabeth as an adult asked for a quilt for Christmas her mother, not a sewer, worked very hard and made her an ugly polyester one, thinking that Elizabeth was saying "that's what good mothers do "(they had a rough time growing up together) and all Elizabeth was asking her to do was go upstairs and get one out of the closet! If you ever get a chance to hear her she is fabulous and she tells this story with a lot of emotion that you can relate to.

  13. TOO funny Victoria! I am glad that SOME people can appreciate the polyester days. My partner's mother wore it until the day she passed on...only 2 years ago. Sorry, I could never really truly appreciate it...

  14. Just washed my poly quilt and put it on my bed again (under my pretty quilt) earlier this week. I thought of you. It's my first quilt, I made it with my grandma when I was 13. I hated it at the time.

  17. Unfortunately, I am old enough to remember when we wore polyester clothing. Men wore polyester doubleknit suits. We were all hot. I am talking sweating hot. You enjoy wearing them. I think I will just watch

  18. I'm with Sharon on the poly thing. When I was eight years old and living in Texas, we took a 2-week family road trip through the SW over spring break. Mum dressed all 3 kids in navy poly knit shorts and white poly knit tops, because she could rinse them out in the motel bathroom sink every night and they'd be dry and ready to wear again in the morning. 40+ years later, my memories of hating those clothes and being so miserably hot/sweaty/itchy/cranky in them are stronger than my memories of the Grand Canyon or whatever else we saw.

  19. Oh my goodness, I remember wearing polyester maxi and mini dresses in the first grade. I hated them! One time I took scissors to the hot pink/turquoise plaid pants so that I wouldn't have to wear them with the matching vest. Unfortunately I didn't cut them high enough because my mom just hemmed them and made shorts. LOL

  20. Well you can make any item of clothing look glamorous! As for the rest of us mere mortals, I just remember a lot of unseemly perspiration:)

  21. I was at an antique store last month and found a quilt, hand quilted with green polyester as the backing; the back will never wear out. My post with it pictured is here; http://stone-belle.blogspot.com/2013/11/antique-shop.html I made some pants and a jacket/skirt combination for my freshman year of college out of the polyester knit, but I didn't get hot since I was in Idaho!
