Way back in November, while at Festival, I met Lyric, as we were chatting across the table with a large group of friends, and she mentioned that she was going to be taping the QUILT show in Feb. I piped up and said, "Really? When? So am I!" It turned out that we were taping on the same day! Small world! This was wonderful on so many levels. One, getting to tape and spend the day with someone you already know is grand! And also, Having now known her, it made for a little girls get away! We had so much fun tooling around Charleston together.
Lyric is an art quilter/ teacher/music lover, who has so many fun tricks up her sleeve. I learned so much from her, while watching her taping! So many other things for me to try in my quilts! She opened up a new set of tools for me to explore.
Lyric was kind enough to give me a copy that I can giveaway of her Book, Art+Quilt Design Principles and creativity exercises! It's so cool that we were put together because even though we make different kinds of quilts, a lot about our books, relate. Inspiration, tools and exercises to get you trying new things, and all the good stuff about design!
Want to win a copy of her book?

ReplyDeleteI was in Charleston last year - I loved - we saw so many trees like the one you are in front of :)
Hi: I haven't tried trapunto or couching or discharge dyeing.... thanks for the chance to win.

ReplyDeletetrapunto. i don't know what is stopping me ;-)
ReplyDeleteI love Lyric's work ... and know I would make good use of her book. Thanks to you both for the great giveaway.
ReplyDeleteI've tried a lot of techniques in quilting but I'm scared to death to try beading though I love how it looks!
ReplyDeleteThat would be a whole cloth quilt - toooo boring! I couldn't stand looking at solid white or cream for dozens of hours.
ReplyDeleteThe list is long, but I've never tried thread painting.
ReplyDeleteAs I think about it, even though I've been quilting for years, I have a very long list of techniques that I haven't tried. Trapunto, paper piecing, and machine quilting are probably the top three. Can you tell that I'm an appliquer who hand pieces and hand quilts?
ReplyDeletehand sewing any part of my quilts! :)
ReplyDeleteI haven't yet sewn a curve or sewn a dresden plate or done blocking a quilt to get it to the right shape... SOO much to try - sooo much to learn!!!
ReplyDeleteSince I have been blogging I have been trying lots of new and wonderful things. Right now I am trying to learn to machine quilt. I am improving every day.
ReplyDeleteOne thing I haven't tried to do is thread art on a quilt. It's so pretty, just not sure how to start, if I even could do it.

ReplyDeleteI have never tried painting on a quilt yet and would really love to try embelishing with layers!
ReplyDeleteThanks.
Hello! I'm not sure if it counts, but I've never entered a quilt in a show/contest. I think I've tried all the quilting methods, application & quilting methods. So, I should make that my new goal for the next year.
ReplyDeleteThanks Lyric for the great give-away!
I have never tried paper piecing. Maybe 2013 is the year.

ReplyDeleteI have a HUGE list of untried things, but the thing I want to do next is painting on fabric & stamping...ok, & dying fabric, too.
ReplyDeleteThanks for a chance to win Lyric's book.
I'm so glad you turned me on to Lyric. I want to try screen printing fabric and will give her Quilt University class a go!

ReplyDeleteAppliqué...I'm new to quilting and am eager to give this a try. Thanks!
ReplyDeleteI have never sewn a perfect seam:)
ReplyDeleteI have never tried Trapunto. I am thinking about doing it with a little piece I'm making right now, but don't have any idea how to really do it so I'll have to wing it.
ReplyDeleteMany things including following "the rules". I have not tried intricately pieced blocks, or fabric dyeing. I'll gladly skip those blocks, but I really want to try my hand at dyeing fabric sometime. Any thanks to you and Lyric for this giveaway.
ReplyDeleteI haven't tried FMQ. I've just done straight lines so far.
ReplyDeleteThanks!

ReplyDeleteI haven't tried adding beads, or a block with curved seams that repeat ( like an apple core pattern).
ReplyDeleteI have never done any fabric dying, but I'd love to try. I am worried that I'll make a mess and end up with something funky I can't use. Silly really.
ReplyDeleteThere are so many things I have not tried -- One that I plan to start this year is a clamshell quilt. Another is using my hnad stamped fabric in a quilt.
ReplyDeleteI have only been quilting for a year so the list of thing I haven't done is quite long. Thanks for the giveaway!!
ReplyDeleteI have never made an 'art' quilt, this looks like a good book!

I could not think of anything that I hadn't tried yet as all I could think of were the things I had tried, so I was reading through the comments to see what I could find there and there it was: screenprinting! I have got the screens, I have got the paints, I even got some paint thickening powder to add to regular fabric paint, all waiting for the right time.
ReplyDeleteI really have been trying to learn to be more free with my quilt making, just cut shapes and work with them in a quilt, I want to learn to do more textural quilts using different thread weights/ fabrics/ layering of fabrics, just not cottons...
ReplyDeletesort of like collages with paper or paintings with layers
but with fabrics...
I need to break out of the box! would love to read this book and own it would be awesome, thanks!!!
Kathie

ReplyDeleteI've painted and I've quilted, but never have painted on my quilts. I need to try that!
ReplyDeleteThis is a tough one - when you've been quilting for...wow, 38 years? eeshh! Well, I have hand quilted, but I have never set up my antique quilt frame (in the attic) and put a quilt in it for hand quilting. I wonder if I'll EVER do that! (I remember crawling under the quilt frame as a young girl!)Thanks for the walk down memory lane! :)
ReplyDeleteI have never done paper piecing. I've watched shows and videos on the process, but have yet to get out the old phone book and give it a go!

If I had answered this question before October 2011, my list would be very long. That is when I joined a small group of friends in an art quilt group. We meet once a month and experiment to learn new things, and every two months a new 12x12 is due to be show. Our topics include words, colors, themes so far. Now it would be photo transfer, and manipulating fabric for texture. O course, they are on the list to try.
ReplyDeleteThis book would be great for my group so fingers crossed! I love Lyric Kinard. She is so talented, and very gracious in sharing what she knows.
Quilting so excites me! I'm always eager to try and learn new things although at times I'm intimidated. This year I've made it a point to continually ask myself - what am I waiting for? I'd like to learn how to embellish with thread and paint.
ReplyDeleteThank you for the chance.
I've never thread painted or dyed fabric. (and with over 30 years at this!)
ReplyDeletePhyllis
The book would be perfect for my next project!

ReplyDeleteI haven't tried Y-seams - just the thought of them frightens me!
ReplyDeleteThanks for a fabulous giveaway!
There are many things I haven't tried. Thread painting is just one.
ReplyDeleteThere are several things but the first that comes to mind is machine quilting on a long arm. Mainly because I don't own one!
ReplyDeleteI have not been brave enough to try painting on fabric, although I paint on nearly any other surface!
ReplyDeleteLove Lyric's work, so inspirational!
Thanks for the chance! Sounds like your taping was wonderful. Reading through the comments, I have done about everything, except I haven't ever quilted on a long arm, and I haven't tried free motion quilting on a treadle machine, though I have heard about that. I have not done a realistic portrait on a quilt, though most of my quilts are a story in quilt form. I love a challenge!
ReplyDeleteLove, love, love Lyric! I haven't tried Sunbonnet Sue and I'm not sorry I haven't. Just can't get into that trend. Thanks for a great giveaway, Victoria!
ReplyDeleteAs a relatively new quilter I've yet to try many embellishment techniques. Yet it's hand quilting that is first and foremost of all techniques that I'm most interested in learning.

I haven't tried dyeing my own fabrics or very much free motion quilting....I do lots of line quilting by machine or handquilting. Both dyeing my own fabrics and free motion would add more ........thanks for the opportunity.
ReplyDeleteI would love to experiment with fabric dyeing.
ReplyDeleteI haven't tried image transfer yet. I hope to try some next weekend.
ReplyDeleteI haven't yet attempted machine quilting......love hand quilting very much, but I do find it very, very time consuming at times.
ReplyDeleteI love your book and am finding lots of inspiration.

ReplyDeleteSomeday I will cross my safe zone and make an art quilt. Have fun in AU!
ReplyDeleteThere are a lot of things I haven't yet tried, but I think the thing I would like most to try that scares me the most is figurative work.

How long of a list do you want?? Curves, machine quilting, zippers (not in my quilts but in sewing), y seams... I could go on and on.
ReplyDeleteI haven't tried doing thread painting with my quilting yet.
ReplyDeleteMy list is also long but the first thing that came to mind was working with curves. Someday maybe!
ReplyDeleteI have never dyed fabric - yet! And I love the rich colours that result, so I will some day ...
ReplyDeleteThank you for the giveaway Victoria!
I haven't made a total improv quilt, or a whole cloth quilt, or used dying techniques on cloth, or thread painting, handquilting. So many ideas.....
ReplyDeleteHi Victoria,

Thanks for the opportunity!
Vicky F
