Big Rig play

I played a bit of hooky today, and went to visit my friend John, from Big Rig Quilting.  He just lives up the street fromme, AND he has a Handi Quilter long arm!  He said I could come play on it, so you better believe I did!

 Thanks John! It was just the break I needed....

 There is a definite learning curve... Maybe one day!  It looks like I know what I'm doing right?

Then I came home and flipped through the new  APRIL/MAY QUILT magazine...

And I saw this quilt...  Deb Finan, the editor of Quilt Mag, and Mary Koval, (antique quilt dealer/historian) were talking about an old quilt, then gave the pattern for it... I was so struck by it, and I had to play and make one block...


I may need to make more...

    yes you need to make more and yes I think you need a long arm machine with all the quilts you make AND I can only imagine how creative you can get with the quilting.
    ok I need to make the quilt just like the antique one too! I just happen to have fabric in the closet that would work to reproduce the antique one :)

    I have only played one time with a friends long arm - I sure don't have room for one and they cost sooo much! love that quilt block.

    Isn't that a gorgeous quilt block, worthy of a big quilt for sure?

    Big Rig... LOL! LOVE that name! So clever! You look like a pro with that machine.

    I agree with the previous poster who said to make more and quilt it on the big rig!

    Super duper fun!!!! did you try both level of handles? they also make micro handles.. sometimes it's just finding the right handle for you and how you work.. then it goes ZOOM ZOOM! And you just 'made that block'.. oh my.. you rock!

    Too bad I don't live in NYC! I would love to take a turn trying out a long arm machine!

    Love the name "Big Rig" perfect for a guy who quilts. I almost bought a machine like his, but settled for a grace king frame, a very nice frame, and a Juki 2010, and honestly am glad I did. There is such a learning curve as you said. I'm still learning, and half the time, I baste on the frame with the machine, take it off the frame, and fmq the way I learned, moving the quilt. Crazy I know. I will buy a "big rig" someday, but not for awhile.
