Fons & Potter has a book out on Log Cabin quilts. I have to say, I've never made a LOG CABIN quilt! But after looking through the book, I can now see that I may need to dig out my solids. I love the look of this quilt below, featured in the book!
This is and Amish Barn Raising quilt dated Feb 18th, 1921... Doesn't it look MODERN?
The book has a load of great tips on cutting your fabrics and for which size of blocks your working with so all your math is done for you. Gotta love that!
It also shows how mixing your colors can easily change the pattern and design of the quilt. Like, making the courthouse steps and other designs.

No way! I love log cabins. Thank you for sharing that! Now there are a few more projects on my list!
ReplyDeletemy mother used to be the qayg log cabin queen, but I've never made more than a few blocks. I'm collecting solids for one like in your pix. as for modern, I think it is graphic, which is why it is timeless.
ReplyDeleteThanks V the log cabin has always been my favorite block!
ReplyDeleteOooh, fun! Thanks, I'm off to browse the download...
ReplyDeleteThank you! My very first quilt was a log cabin. My teacher thought it taught you to cut accurately and sew accurately. Boy was she right! My blocks were all different sizes. She made us work and work and work. I'm loving the 'woven logs'! Nice.
ReplyDeleteThanks for the info - I love the log cabin!!
ReplyDeleteI love log cabins, I've made a couple dozen in my day :0). I hope you enjoy the process of making one too.
ReplyDeleteThanks for the heads up on the free ebook, it's in my files now :0)
Happy Sewing
cannot count the number of log cabins I've made. it was the first pattern I made and I taught it in a paper piecing class for begginers a few times. You can make so many different designs just by incorperating other log cabin designs like courthouse steps with reg blocks. they make really fast baby quilts too. The last one I made I used all batiks in lemonade colors. My fav is the one I used reproduction fabrics and civil war fabrics.
ReplyDeleteHave fun!
I just started a log cabin and am really enjoying it! I am taking a class, but have also been referencing the following books:

I love the simplicity of the block and the ability to create so many different designs!
Thanks for the heads up!
ReplyDeleteLog cabin quilts are one of my favorites. Before I start another one I am making myself quilt the one I pieced over 25 years ago. I recently took the basted quilt apart, washed it (it was dirty from sitting around), and now it needs pin basted with new batting and quilted. I am not sure I am digging the fabrics in the quilt - it is all 70's vintage fabric now!
