Modern Baby

Baby Stories &  Baby Showers......
I didn't know when I should have a baby shower. When we were waiting to adopt Beatrice, we waited and waited, and then two days before my birthday in 2001, we got the news!

The first pic we received of Beatrice...in an email!

At about the same time, a US aircraft was down on China soil, and they would not release the plane. So, instead of getting on the plane to go bring our baby home, we had to wait for the US to lift the ban on American's traveling to China... It was a torturous extra two weeks before we could go and get her... Instead of getting her a week before her first birthday, we held her a week after her first Birthday.... (ABOVE) Here we are the morning after we first held her in our arms, we are at the office signing and stamping her little feet and hands on the adoption paperwork. She thought it was hilarious... Red ink all over the place... not just on her hands and feet!   Amazing, spectacular day.
I made about 10 baby quilts for her while we waited to bring her home... None was ever good enough..

We did eventually, have a baby shower for her.. I think I cried happy tears, all day long.
No one gave us any quilts. hahaha! They knew I had that covered!

And my.. time does fly...
The agony of WAITING to adopt, and the five minutes ( as it seems)  that have passed til now, (teenager!)  have been the greatest years of my life.

So now, I make baby quilts for everyone else! Including one for this book:

I am one of the contributors in the new book "Modern Baby" for Martingale!

  3. Love hearing about how you became a mom. I have made many baby quilts for friends and family. I do not have kids of my own but my nephews are spoiled with the quilts I make them :)

  4. I loved reading your story. Beatrice is a lucky girl! I have made a few baby quilts for friends and a couple of twin size quilts for my 6 year old. :)

  5. Thanks for sharing your story :-) I made a baby quilt just recently for a friend - she really thought it was special :-)

  6. So great to know a bit more of your story. Lovely photos, too. The first quilt I finished was for my friend's baby daughter and since then I made a few more for friends and family.

  10. I love making baby quilts, even more than I love making wedding quilts. What a joyful occasion to commemorate. One of the first quilts I ever made was an appliqued baby quilt with a teddy bear, sleeping in a red gingham lace trimmed bed; it was tied with red yarn. Made it for my daughter 30 years ago - she still has it. These days I made quilts for HER babies. And everyone else's babies, lol!

  11. Thank you for sharing your story with us. How beautiful. :)

  12. Such a beautiful happy story...and yes the years go far too fast! The first quilt I made was for my eldest...and I really had no idea what I was doing, but it was the best feeling to make something myself rather than buy it. Surprising it is still together, though a little rough around the edges!

  13. I like your Story, it's so full of love.

I sewed many baby quilts .... for my own granddaughter, the granddaughter of my ex-husband and grandchildren of my second dh. It's so much fun, all the children around us!

  14. I've made a couple of baby quilts. Loved every second of making them. I know they will be spat on and weed on and slept on and under and swaddled in and that makes my heart so happy!

I love your quilt in the book. I would so totally make that - it's gorgeous!

  15. I have made baby quilts for my kids, my nieces, nephews, friends, fellow officer's wives when DH was in the Navy. Baby quilts were really the way I started quilting!

  16. Happy story.
I have also 11 years old girl and it is hard to talk with her sometimes. I made about 5 quilts for her so far.

I made two baby quilts for my children and two for my cousin children. Now I make large quilts for my children because they grow up so they need large quilts.

  17. What a beautiful post and I can imagine your agony of an extra 2 week wait. I am an adoptive mum and our son turns 5 on Tuesday - time really does fly. My first quilt was for him and I've made a few since!

  18. Baby quilts are my favorite quilts to make and I always seem to be needing to make one! Love your contribution to the book!

  19. I have a three year old God daughter who is the love of my life and she has had a quilt a year so far and I'm sure it won't stop there. I've made quilts for everyone in my family so far, now working on the teenage years quilts for nieces and nephews and the 'I'm leaving home' quilts for the others.
I love the bright blues and your quilting on your contribution - just gorgeous.

  21. What a delightful story. I know the extra waiting must have been stressful. I love your quilt in this book. Yes I would like to win a copy.
I have made several baby quilts for others, but having no children, never for my own. The closest I have come is making one for my niece's baby.

    ReplyDelete
  22. Your lovely B was certainly worth the wait. The book looks like a lot of fun.

  23. Yes I have made quilts for my kids when they were little but I have a taste for modern now and need to starting those baby quilts! Thanks so much.

  24. What a lovely story!
I'm making a baby quilt for my niece who is expecting her first baby!

    ReplyDelete
  25. Thank you for sharing your adoption story. The wait always seem to last forever, just like the love the little ones being into a home. My husband and I are adoptive parents and we too had a 2 week wait, ours because of heavy snows in the mid-west. Our son is now 36 and that wait was worth it. My first quilt was a baby quilt for an extended family member who was also adopting--it was a gift FOR both of us. That baby quilt jump started me into my world of quilt making, I've been quilting almost daily ever since--what fun.

  26. goodness - baby quilts - I have made more baby quilts than I can count - I have 25 nieces and nephews and almost all of them got a quilt at one time or another - I'm afraid I called it quits for the next generation - I couldn't keep up - the hazards of coming from an extra large family.
Your photos of baby Beatrice are so cute - she has grown into a beautiful girl - you are lucky aren't you to be her mom

    ReplyDelete
  27. This looks like such fun! Lots of new ideas.
I did make a baby quilt for my niece's daughter.
A twin sized postage stamp quilt - over 6,000 pieces!
I made twin sized so they could put it on the floor with the baby and so the baby could grow up with it and transition to her big girl bed when the time came.

  28. It seems all i do lately is make baby quilts. This book would be great inspiration!

    ReplyDelete
  29. I can't imagine the agony of that wait! I haven't made too many baby quilts yet. I hadn't started quilting when my girls were small and I've been in the wrong time of life for it. The baby stage is coming closer, though :)

    ReplyDelete
  30. What a great story regarding the adoption!

I have made MANY baby quilts and continue to do so. For grandchildren, for Basics, for charity (Arnold Palmer Children's Hospital).

  31. I have so far made one baby quilt, for my baby niece. It was mostly hand pieced, then was the first thing I quilted when I bought my machine, and it's my own design, which I love.

I plan to start making Project Linus baby quilts soon though! We received one for our youngest son when he was in NICU after his birth, and I committed then to Pay it forward one day!

  32. What a sweet wonderful story! I am so excited that our extended family is expecting its first baby in 13.5 years!!!! I will certainly be making a quilt for this newest addition.

    ReplyDelete
  33. I have made many baby quilts, but unfortunately I was not quilting when my two girls were born. Now, I keep making quilts for my grandchildren and their children. Baby quilts are fun quilts - small and easy to handle and to try different techniques. Your quilt is beautiful - love the color!! Thanks for the chance.

  34. Our kid's teenage babysitter is now grown up, married, and just had her first baby. So today I'm finishing the binding on baby Avery's quilt so we can visit her in the hospital. :-)

  35. Oh what a sweet post today, made me get all misty-eyed! Reminded me of a day at the Mpls. airport, over 35 years ago - when my niece arrived from Korea. It was like witnessing a birth - it WAS a birth, the birth of their daughter to them. So special.
I think every quilter makes baby quilts. I just made one this year - my daughter's good friend found out she was expecting, and when I found out that some people were not being encouraging toward her about it (long story), I couldn't make one fast enough for her.
    Thanks for your beautiful story.

    ReplyDelete
  36. It does go by so fast! I have a 15 year old and a 12 year old. I make baby quilts all the time. I made at least 3 for each of my own kids, not counting receiving blankets etc. Thanks for the chance to win this great book!

  38. What a sweet post. My baby boy is 34 yrs old today!! I've made many baby quilts over the years, but much more traditional than these LOL. In fact, I've got another one to make for my new grandson Jack due in July - love.

  39. I didn't know where you you were going with your story as I was reading. I can relate somewhat. We were told we couldn't have another baby due to my health problems......Well, guess what, We did and he's about to be 32 years old ! The first baby quilt I ever made was for him and now 30 or 40 baby quilts later he's going through the same thing. But, God is gracious, He will provide !

  40. What a wonderful story. And yes time does fly by. My son is graduating from college tomorrow and it seems like yesterday I was moving him into the dorm for the first time. I love making baby quilts. I make them for babies that aren't even conceived yet and I also have made some to donate to hospitals. I think they are the most fun to make. The colors and prints etc.

  45. I wasn't quilting when we adopted my son from Korea, but started when he was grown. At the time he arrived
I was into ceramics so he has a few pieces left (those that didn't get broke by flying objects). Now I have made
quite a few bed sized quilts for the great man he has become. I know the feeling well on the day he arrived, it
    becomes more apparent each day.

  51. One of the attorneys in our law firm shared his adoption journey with all of us. He and his wife traveled to China a year ago and brought their beautiful baby (roughly the same age as your's) back to Tennessee. They are deliriously happy - just like the 3 of you are. Thank you for sharing this story with us!!

  52. I have made baby quilts for all my grandchildren. I can see the change from the very first one to the last one in 2012. The first ones were very basic and the latest ones a little more intricate. But they have all been so much fun. It makes the waiting a little easier. I found myself praying for the little one as I was piecing and quilting and that alone is a big plus.

  53. I am working on a baby quilt right now for one of my PhD students from India. She has "dubbed" me as her American mom. I am so excited to finish it and give it to her. The shower is next weekend, so I have to get it done quickly!!

  58. When I was pregnant with my daughterI bought fabric which sat forever in a closet. When she was 15 I got it out and started to cut it up to give her a quilt to take to college. I had never sewn ANYTHING. I put together a quilt with framed squares all by hand and when I took it into City Quilter to look for a backing I remember the women looking at it and saying with awe "That must have been a LOT of work!" I didn't know any better. It was ready for her 16th birthday. We named it "Most Beautiful Quilt in the World", of course, and Most Beautiful has been with her ever since, age 23 now. She has several quilts now, as does my son and many babies and Katie's friends and I am now working on one for another of her friends. Here's to sewing machines, rotary cutters and mats and all the quilters I learned from. I still hand quilt but maybe will branch out to machine soon. But holding my daughter gave me more joy than anything in my life. Your girl is gorgeous and I am sure your Most Beautiful! Congratulations on all the love to come.

  82. I have made many, many baby quilts, they are my favorite thing to make. I didn't start quilting until my son was up in elementary school so I've made quilts for him, but not baby quilts. But pretty much everybody I know (and plenty of people I don't know) with a baby or grandbaby has been given a baby quilt. You're right about the time passing so fast -- my son is 23 and on his own now and it just doesn't seem possible.

  86. Your adoption story is so special. Thank you for sharing it. And, your Beatrice is growing into a beautiful young lady.
I like to make Rag Baby Blankets. They go together fast, and they get softer and softer each time they get washed. I also make a quick patch quilt - 8 different fabrics - 7 rows, and placed on the diagonal. Also goes together quickly, and I can quilt it myself, just sew diagonal both ways through the squares.

  114. I just finished three quilts for my youngest grandchildren last month. I gave Reed, our newest, his quilt the day he came home from the hospital. Now, all ten of my grandchildren have quilts made by me. I've already started on the second round--my oldest granddaughter, age 20, got hers for graduation. Your pictures with Beatrice are so sweet! Yes, the years DO go by too quickly!

  116. I am embarrassed to say that I have started a few kids quilts for my daughter to only have them partially completed. She is in her 20's now and she has guilted me to complete them. I am glad to say I am making progress.

  118. Lovely story Victoria! Your daughter is beautiful, and I know from my nieces how quickly time passes ... just watch Boo will be 16 in 2 days!

I'm making baby quilts right now for twins born to friends of ours on February 11 - which also happened to be the first Family Day holiday in BC! It was very appropriate because mom and dad wanted so badly to be a family! Baby boy one is done, and baby girl one is half done - I should be working on it right now!

Love all your designs - including this baby quilt!

  143. The first quilt I made was for our first daughter, who is now 32 years old. Lots of baby quilts made over the intervening years, especially for babies of soldiers since we spent so many years in the military. Your story is wonderful!

  145. My first two baby quilts were for our two children. I have our daughter's safely packed away for future use & our son's was missing for quite a long time until we were talking about it. He was 25 yrs old & he asked me if I could fix it like it was new again. He had taken it with him when he moved away from home. Just so happens that I still had some of the fabric I used so yes I could make it new again & now it is also safely packed away for future use.
I love to sew baby quilts & I donate lots to various charities or I give them to Grammas to be so they have a special quilt when their grandbabies come to visit.
Thank you for sharing your story about your beautful daughter!
